About this experience
This kimono experience takes place at Nishijin Tondaya (Nishijin Lifestyle Museum)—a traditional merchant townhouse built in 1885 and registered as national cultural heritage (and also designated a Structure of Landscape Importance in Kyoto). You’ll be dressed by staff in a kimono made of 100% silk. After dressing, you can wear the kimono inside the machiya and take photos with settings such as a tatami room, a Noh room, and six interior gardens as your backdrop. The booking menu also lists multiple kimono “grades” (standard plus several upgrade levels), and the official site notes that men’s kimono are available as well. Tondaya also describes a “kimono dressings” option where they teach how to behave while wearing a kimono (kimono manners), in addition to helping you dress.
